Questions

Cheaper and more custom? That sounds too good to be true.

It would have been, before AI. A BI tool this custom was never something one data person could build and run, so you paid a vendor for a compromise. Now your data person can, and you pay only what it costs to run. The catch is real: you own it, so you are responsible for it.

Our BI vendor is adding AI. Why switch?

They are adding AI to tools built before AI, usually on a higher tier, and it keeps you inside their tool. This was built for AI from the first line, and it connects to the AI your team already uses.

Who builds it? Will my team turn into a software team?

Your data person builds it with AI, following the blueprint, with me guiding the build. It ships with automated tests and engineering guardrails, so every new feature follows good practice. Expect a few focused weeks to build it, then less of their time than your BI takes today.

Our data isn't clean enough for this.

That is a reason to start. Data stays messy mostly because nobody can see where it breaks. Once your metrics are defined, every place the data does not fit becomes your cleanup list, and you fix it one stream at a time.

What happens if our data person leaves?

It is standard, documented code in your own repository. A new hire with an AI assistant can pick it up, and nothing is locked inside a vendor.

Will the AI make up numbers?

It only reads your data. Answers come from your defined metrics, and every answer shows its source.

Can't we just build dashboards with our AI assistant?

You should, and that is how dashboards get built here too. The difference is where they live. Here every chart uses one definition per metric, access follows roles and row-level security, and changes are reviewed and logged. For one analyst exploring alone, a chat is enough. Once a second person relies on the number, you need the app.

What do we need to run it?

A handful of services most companies already pay for. Everything runs in your accounts, under your name:

  • A domain and DNS: the address your team visits, such as Cloudflare
  • App hosting: a server or app platform that runs the portal, such as DigitalOcean, AWS or Azure
  • An analytics warehouse: where your reporting data lives: Postgres or Snowflake today, others as needed
  • An app database: users, settings, saved views and the audit log
  • A code repository: where the portal’s code and history live, such as GitHub
  • An AI provider account: powers Ask and plain-English changes
  • Sign-in: your existing Google or Microsoft single sign-on

Keep the pipeline tools you already use to load your data.
